In 2021, Hugh Park made headlines as the former telecommunications technician who traded his tools for textbooks to become a lawyer. Four years later, he has reached another pinnacle of academic excellence.

Park has emerged as the top student for the Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Business and International Law at the University of Guyana for the Class of 2025.

He was officially recognised as the Best Graduating Student at the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Awards and Prize Giving Ceremony on February 11, 2026.

While many might have been satisfied with achieving their Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Park viewed his Master’s as a necessary step in a much larger vision. Speaking about his motivation for returning to the classroom, Park cited a desire for personal development and a need to become a more “rounded” professional as he approaches his ultimate goal: a PhD.

His performance within the University’s Department of Law reflects a deep scholarly discipline and a specialised interest in how international legal frameworks intersect with business—a critical area of expertise as Guyana continues its rapid economic expansion.Park’s academic success is mirrored by his professional rise within the Attorney General’s Chambers and the Ministry of Legal Affairs. Having previously served as Parliamentary Counsel and State Counsel, he currently holds the portfolio of Law Revision Officer.

In this capacity, he plays a pivotal role in the legislative work of the State, providing litigation support and contributing to the vital task of revising Guyana’s Laws.

Despite the accolades and the shift from technical work to high-level legal research, Park remains deeply grounded. He is quick to credit his success to a robust support system of mentors and peers who believed in his potential during the most daunting stretches of his journey.

“From technician to top student,” Park’s story remains one of the most compelling examples of professional reinvention in Guyana. It serves as a reminder that, with perseverance and a commitment to lifelong learning, the transition from the field to a faculty leadership role is not only possible but also a pathway to service to the country.
