GDF expanding air, sea and drone capabilities in 2026 – GDF Chief

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is set to significantly strengthen its air and maritime capabilities this year, as part of a broader push to build a more modern and resilient military force.

Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, on Thursday announced that the GDF will receive two new fixed-wing aircraft within the next quarter, expanding the Force’s air fleet and enhancing its ability to conduct surveillance, transportation and rapid response operations.

On the maritime front, a 600-foot wharf at the Coast Guard base in Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is expected to be completed this year. The new facility will accommodate the GDF’s largest ocean-going patrol vessel, which he said is scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of the year. The €39.5 Million offshore patrol vessel is being procured from France.

The development is expected to boost the country’s offshore patrol and maritime security capacity.

Brigadier Khan also revealed that the Force is currently conducting trials for newly built tactical river boats, which are expected to arrive before the end of the month. These vessels will enhance the GDF’s ability to operate effectively along Guyana’s waterways.

In addition, the Defence Force is expanding its drone operations to support troops wherever they are deployed, with the acquisition of other strategic assets also ongoing.

The Chief of Defence Staff made the announcements while addressing the opening of the Guyana Defence Force’s Annual Officers’ Conference.

He said the vision is to “build, deploy and operate a modern, smart and resilient” force capable of supporting national security and development, while preparing to confront both present and future challenges.
