The South Dakota Circuit is set for a high-speed facelift as the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) moves to transform the venue into a world-class racing destination.

President Mahendra Boodhoo has officially confirmed that intensive infrastructure works will begin this week, specifically tailored to accommodate the high-performance demands of the upcoming GT Challenge de las Américas series.

The project represents a pivotal shift in the region’s motorsport landscape, with the ultimate goal of securing official FIA accreditation.

The centrepiece of the renovation is a radical redesign of the circuit’s logistical hub. A brand-new, active pit lane will be integrated along the main straight, mirroring the layouts of premier international circuits.

The move is designed to streamline race strategy and enhance crew safety during high-speed transitions. Alongside the pit lane, the project includes:

  • Advanced Safety Fencing: Upgrading the circuit to meet rigorous international protection standards.
  • Curb Extensions: A complete rehabilitation of track curbs to handle the increased downforce and wider footprint of GT3-class machinery.
  • Technical Precision: Final surveys have been completed by engineers, with heavy equipment now mobilising at the Timehri facility.
The project includes the extensive rehabilitation and extension of track curbs to ensure the circuit can handle the increased demands of GT3-class machinery

While the immediate focus is on July’s GT Challenge, Boodhoo emphasised that these works are merely the first phase of a broader, continuous upgrade program.

“The vision is to systematically improve the infrastructure until we achieve official FIA accreditation,” Boodhoo explained. This phased approach allows the club to host immediate international events while maintaining a steady trajectory toward becoming a globally recognised, certified racing destination.

Technical oversight is being led by Executive Member Ritesh Singh, who is prioritising precision and durability. Singh noted that the planning phase is already behind them, and the focus is now on the “race against the clock” to deliver the upgrades.

“The engineers have carried out the necessary assessments, and mobilisation begins immediately,” Singh stated.

As the GT Challenge approaches, the modernisation of South Dakota is expected to solidify Guyana’s position as the premier destination for sports tourism in the Caribbean. (Modified GMR&SC Press Release)
