Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali has reassured citizens that the country’s security architecture has been monitoring the situation in neighbouring Venezuela.

“The security architecture is fully active,” the President said in an invited comment early Saturday morning.

“The Guyana Defence Force and the security forces are monitoring the situation and Guyanese should be reassured that the government is working to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.”

At least seven explosions have been heard in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, early Saturday morning, followed by a low-flying aircraft, according to The Associated Press. The southern area of ‌the ‌capital city, located near a major military ‌base, was reportedly without electricity.

Meanwhile, President Ali said the Secretary General of CARICOM, Dr Carla Barnett, has also been updated on the developments.
