Guyanese Mark Vieira delivered a sizzling run in his newly acquired Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, but it was Group Four driver Quinlan Lall who was fastest on four wheels at Saturday’s qualifying for the Caribbean Clash of Champions at South Dakota Circuit.

British rider Dan Linfoot, who holds the current track record at the venue, clocked the fastest time of the day, setting the stage for an exhilarating day of racing on Sunday.

Vieira, driving the newly acquired car competitively for the first time, clocked a fastest lap time of 01:16.057s, while his main competitor Will Redford out of Europe, driving the AJM’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, had a fastest lap time of 01:16.274s.

Vieira said: “I wasn’t expecting the 16 zero. I was expecting like a 17 two, so I think tomorrow (Sunday) you’re gonna see a lap record time, maybe a 15 one, 15 two.”

Lall said: “The car, believe it or not, is still not 100%. There is still a little bit more that we can fine tune within our own settings internally. The driver as well will get a little more sleep tonight and we will come back stronger tomorrow for sure.”

Lall will start on pole in Group Four, with Poorandat Boodhoo second on the grid, followed by Mohan Rangasammy, Andrew King, Rameez Mohamed and Gavin Gayadin.

At qualifying, Linfoot had a fastest time of 01:15.615s, while US-based Lall of Team CAMS with his Mazda RX-7 recorded the fastest time by a car (01:15.849s) on the day.

The current track record is 1:15.534s, currently held by UK rider Dan Linfoot.

While Linfoot and fellow UK rider Gregg Black (01:15.962s) were fastest on two wheels, the Superstock A Class saw Kevin Persaud pipping his Guyanese counterparts, points leader and favourite Matthew Vieira.

Persaud had a fastest lap time of 01:17.577s, while Vieira clocked 01:17.629s.

In Group Two, Shan Seejatan will start on pole, with Rameez Mohamed second on the grid and Jeremy Ten Pow third, while Steven Nobrega, Anand Ramchand and Anthony Evelyn shared the top three spots on the grid in that order in the Starlet Cup.

Stefan Jeffrey is in pole for Group Three, followed by Danny Persaud and Nobrega, with Elan Rahaman on pole in the Street Bike class ahead of Junior Da Silva and Elwin Chase.

Naresh Alves will start on pole in the Street Tuner, with Shivan Ramnauth and Amjad Rahaman second and third on the grid respectively, while Seejatan, Ryan Rahaman and Adrian Fernandes occupy the top three spots on the grid in that order in the Sports Tuner class.

Seejatan continued his fine showing on the day, winning the Vitz Cup race after starting on pole, while Sylvester Carew won the opening race of the Rookie class. Malicia Lawrence was the lone female to compete on the day.

On Sunday, following a competitors meeting at 09:00h, the on-track action will get underway at 10:00h with the official Lap of Honour, followed by the first race.
