The truck involved in the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge accident on Thursday morning was not overweight. This is according to a statement from the Ministry of Public Works.

“The Ministry wishes to categorically dismiss any rumors or misinformation suggesting that the truck involved was overweight. Verification of records confirms that the vehicle was weighed prior to crossing and successfully passed the axle load limit,” the ministry stated.

According to the ministry’s statement, the cause of the incident has been identified strictly as a mechanical malfunction.

The truck was transporting cement across the bridge when it suffered a mechanical failure. The truck reportedly rolled downhill and crashed into several other vehicles.

Scott Dorwart, who was in one of the vehicles behind the truck, lost his life in the accident. Several others were also injured in the accident.

Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh confirmed that six vehicles were involved in the incident.
